FARMERS BRANCH ANIMAL SHELTER
A camp that focused on an experiential learning effort in coordination with the Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center. The week is filled with understanding the mission of the organization and its needs in serving the animals and the community. Students worked Monday-Thursday to create and build necessary items for the shelter and its guests, and delivery took place on Friday morning. Students also received a private tour of the shelter, learning about their service to the greater community, the position of the local volunteer vet and her dedication to the field, the jobs of each of their full-time employees, and had time to spend with the animals. Finally, they wrote a reflective piece about their experiential learning project and wrote thank-you notes to the shelter.
I designed the camp in an alternative setting for students not usually able to build items during the school year, serving an organization with whom the school had not previously built a relationship.
